Merle Gordon Huffman, 94, a beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 24, 2026, at Signature Healthcare in Glasgow, KY. Born on November 25, 1931, in Knob Lick, KY, Merle lived a life rooted in dedication to family, service, hard work, and quiet joys.

Merle was the cherished son of the late Terry Garnett and Grace Freeman Huffman. He grew up surrounded by the rolling hills of Knob Lick, Kentucky, where the values of kindness, perseverance, and integrity were instilled early in his life. Throughout his years, Merle remained deeply connected to his Kentucky roots and the people who shaped his journey.

A proud veteran, Merle served his country honorably in the United States Army. His sense of duty and commitment to service extended well beyond his military years. Following his time in the Army, he forged a meaningful career as both a farmer and in maintenance for the State of Kentucky on the Cumberland Parkway. Whether tending the land or ensuring the smooth operation of an essential roadway, Merle approached each task with diligence and a deep sense of responsibility.

Merle’s faith was an important part of his life. He was a dedicated attendee of Coral Hill Baptist Church, where he found spiritual strength and companionship among his fellow congregants. In both word and deed, Merle lived out the principles of compassion and humility that defined his character.

Family meant everything to Merle. He is survived by his two loving daughters, Lanetta Shive (Mike) of Knob Lick, KY and Sonda Altman (Greg) of Greensburg, KY, who were the pride of his life. His legacy endures through his granddaughter, Kara Ford (John Ray); his grandson, Ryan Shive; and his dear great-grandchildren, Jase Ford and Emma Shive. The joys of his later years were often found in their laughter, achievements, and company.

Merle is also fondly remembered by the memory of his wife, Elizabeth Imogene "Genie" Hensley Huffman; his siblings, Loraine Giangrosso, Maureen Giangrosso, Leola DeWeese, and Terry W. Huffman, who all preceded him in death. Their lives were richly intertwined, and their memories will remain cherished.

Outside of his work and family, Merle enjoyed simple pleasures that enriched his days. He found delight in working word search puzzles, a pastime that spoke to his patience and thoughtful nature. He often drove around the countryside, taking in the beauty of the land he loved so dearly, reflecting on life’s blessings both large and small. Above all, he treasured time spent with his family and friends, nurturing bonds that will last forever in their hearts.

Funeral services will be 1:00pm on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Jessie-Wilson Funeral Home with burial in the Metcalfe Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00-8:00pm and will continue Wednesday after 8:00am at Jessie-Wilson Funeral Home.
